Eagle Scout Project Serves Broward County Seniors

The Area Agency on Aging of Broward County is the fortunate beneficiary of many donations throughout the year but it is not often that the donation comes from an aspiring Eagle Scout.

Ishaan Dixit has been a dedicated Boy Scout since the age of five when he was in first grade. He loves scouting, the hands-on activities and the learning opportunities it provides. He is now 16 years old and working to become an Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program. Since its inception in 1911, only 4% of Scouts have earned this rank after a lengthy review process.

The Dixit family is originally from India where, as his mother explained, caring for elders is a cultural value. Ishaan carries that passion forward here in the United States and feels a sense of responsibility for seniors in his community. Ishaan decided to build and donate park benches for his Eagle Scout project, and he wanted to ensure that it benefited seniors. He researched organizations on his own that assist seniors locally and found the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County. The project has taken about six months to come to fruition and required several steps.

Ishaan needed to decide on an idea for the project, research, create a proposal, and secure approval from his Scout Master and BSA Council. Once those steps were completed, he needed to obtain the approval of his beneficiary. He visited and met with me personally and I was impressed and inspired by the young man’s dedication and very grateful to be the recipient of his project.
