Connecting Seniors with Community Services
Broward Senior Centers serve as a gateway for the elder community. Daycare and Senior Centers connect older adults to vital community services that can help them stay healthy and independent. At the same time, they offer family caregivers respite from caregiving duties while knowing that their loved one is in a safe place.
What is the difference between an Adult Day Care Center and a Senior Center?
Senior Centers
are community facilities focused on providing a broad spectrum of services suited to the diverse needs and interests of independent older persons. They offer programs and services for older individuals in five main categories: health (including mental health), social, nutritional, educational and recreational. Senior Centers offer older persons opportunities to socialize and participate in programs and activities which enhance their quality of life, support their independence and encourage their involvement. According to the National Council on Aging, research shows that older adults who participate in senior center programs can learn to manage and delay the onset of chronic disease and experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental and economic well being.
Adult Day Care Centers
are tailored to meet the physical, emotional and mental needs of older adults who have physical limitations or limited functioning due to memory loss. Adult Day Care is a planned program of activities in a professional care setting designed for older adults who require supervised care during the day. Adult Day Care Centers enable older adults to socialize and enjoy planned activities in a group setting, while still receiving needed health services in a safe, protected environment.
Focal Point Senior Centers
Broward's five Focal Point Senior Centers provide a full spectrum of services for older adults. Some of these include nutrition; arts and crafts; recreation; transportation; education classes; health screening and support; information; public education; referral; and counseling. Senior Day Care Centers
Senior Day Care Centers provide facility-based programs for frail elderly who are able to reside at home and travel to other locales if supervision is available. Services are designed to meet the clients' needs by personnel trained to work with physically-dependent older adults. Some centers accept persons with dementia.
Alzheimer's Day Care Centers
Alzheimer's Day Care Centers are available for patients with medically-diagnosed Alzheimer's disease or related dementias. There are five of these specialized day-care services funded through the Area Agency. Co-payments are required and are assessed according to a sliding scale.
