In Sharon's words, "After retiring and working many little part-time jobs, Norman and I discovered that if one is to live life fully, they need a purpose stronger than eating and entertainment."
As a result, Norman is a lay cantor at several Broward County nursing homes, the Veterans' Nursing home and the state mental hospital; Sharon is his assistant. For over 20 years, they have visited facilities every Saturday, offering Jewish services to the residents of each facility.
In addition, as the parents of a daughter with mental health problems, they have been active advocates for the mentally ill through the Mental Health Association Southeast Florida, as well as members of the National Association for Mentally Ill.
For the past 10 years, Sharon has been teaching a weekly Healthy Living course, open to all county residents. She has named it SAPHIER (Successful Attitude, Positive Healthy Image, Eat and Exercise Right). The course includes exercise, music, and other activities to help people build their self-esteem.
For many years Norman and Sharon have been involved in politics through local Democrat clubs. They have volunteered on many political campaigns of those candidates who support senior, veterans’ and mental health issues.
Norman and Sharon have certainly found a life purpose stronger than eating and entertainment! They truly deserve election, as a team, to the Broward Senior Hall of Fame.
